French fashion designer Pierre Cardin dies at 98

Pierre Cardin, the Italian-born French designer who spent over seven decades in fashion putting his name on clothing, pens and perfumes, has died at the age of 98. Cardin, known for successfully licensing his brand name, died in a hospital in Neuilly, near Paris. In 2002, around 800 products with Cardin’s brand name were being sold in 140 countries.


Cardin loved to use geometric and weird designs, and had developed a fabric, called Cardine, for embossing abstract shapes on garments.


“It is a day of great sadness for all our family. Pierre Cardin is no more,” the family said in a statement. “We are all proud of his tenacious ambition and the daring he has shown throughout his life.”


“It is with great sadness that the members of the Academy of Fine Arts announce the death of their fellow member Pierre Cardin,” the French Academy of Fine Arts tweeted.


Born on July 2, 1922 near Venice, Cardin moved from Italy to France when he was only 2. At 14, he started to work as a tailor’s apprentice. Moving to Paris at the age of 23, he studied architecture, and desgined costumes for the
